Live App Interactive GIS Storm Path Explorer

About Tornado Tracker

Tornado Tracker is a lightweight, responsive GIS mapping dashboard that leverages Leaflet.js to plot historical tornado tracks across the United States. Designed to handle large coordinate datasets efficiently, it lets researchers and weather enthusiasts query and visualize spatial patterns of major storms.

The application translates complex geographic datasets (including starting coordinates, endpoints, width, length, and storm impact parameters) into clean, color-coded vectors colored by their EF-scale rating.

Instructions & Tips

  • Interactive Filtering: Use the sidebar on the map to set a range of years, choose a state, or limit results to specific EF ratings (EF0 - EF5). Click "Apply Filters" to redraw paths.
  • Detailed Popups: Click on any rendered tornado track on the map to see precise metrics such as date, time, length in miles, width, and any recorded injuries or fatalities.
  • Map Fitting: When filtering for a specific state, click the "Fit Map to Tracks" button in the filter pane to automatically pan and zoom directly to the bounding box of the active storm paths.
